Our workshops aim to inspire children to see that hope can be found in the actions of the “courageous few” who chose to act. In response to such examples of selflessness and compassion, they are encouraged to respond by getting involved in social action and so demonstrate that the world can be changed “one kind deed at a time”.
Each workshop focuses on a specific act of rescue and the teachers leading the workshops are encouraged to attend training days to acquire the knowledge and confidence to use our interactive resource packs effectively.
Initially the children are asked to think about the concept of “heroism” both as an impulsive spur-of-the-moment act and when it requires a degree of forethought. They will then, for example, compare an act of saving someone from a burning building with making a commitment to provide shelter to someone knowing that the consequences of discovery could prove fatal?
The next step is to consider the historical context of specific acts of “righteousness” and the choices that had to be made by both the rescuers and the rescued. The children focus on the consequences of these actions for everyone involved and then reflect on what might motivate some people to put themselves in peril to save the lives of strangers.
